Make A Hat Fit For A Queen

This year, communities across the UK will celebrate the Platinum Jubilee over the extended Bank Holiday weekend of 2nd – 5th June. This will mark a truly auspicious moment – a reign of 70 years by Her Majesty the Queen.

As part of the official national celebrations, The Queen and other members of the royal family will be attending The Derby on Saturday 4th June, meaning that the Jubilee celebrations take on an even greater level of importance for Epsom.

A local steering group consisting of business and community representatives, The Jockey Club, the Council and local arts festival organisers has been formed to organise Epsom’s participation in the Jubilee celebrations.

Hats will feature prominently in our plans and themes for the Jubilee weekend. The Queen is rarely seen minus a hat and horse racing is a sport and pastime synonymous with fashion and hats. Hats are colourful, visual, fun and accessible and importantly, can be created and worn by anyone of any age or gender.

We are looking forward to schools, community groups and charities participating in creating their very own millinery masterpieces and to help them, Go Epsom has teamed up with notable Surrey Milliner Jessica Rea to create a series of short films that can be followed by anyone and everyone to help them create their own gorgeous hats. We will be aiming for a sustainable theme, using recycled materials that are affordable and accessible to all.

The hats created, will be showcased at the racecourse over the Jubilee weekend and will receive extensive media coverage – it’s a wonderful opportunity to be involved in what is a truly unique occasion!
